What is ISIN? How to Find ISIN of a Stock in India

ISIN stands for International Securities Identification Number. It is a 12-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a specific security anywhere in the world. In India, every listed share, bond, debenture, and mutual fund unit has its own ISIN. No two securities can have the same ISIN.

Think of ISIN as an Aadhaar number for securities. Just as your Aadhaar uniquely identifies you among 140 crore Indians, the ISIN uniquely identifies a specific security among millions of securities globally. Reliance Industries' equity share has one ISIN. Its debentures have a different ISIN. Each is tracked separately.

What Does an ISIN Look Like?

Indian ISINs start with 'IN' followed by 10 alphanumeric characters. For example, Reliance Industries' equity ISIN is INE002A01018. The first two characters identify the country (IN for India). The next nine characters identify the specific security. The last character is a check digit.

ISIN Format: IN + 9 character security code + 1 check digit

Why Does ISIN Matter for Investors?

You rarely need to type an ISIN yourself when buying or selling stocks. Your broker platform handles it automatically when you search by company name or stock symbol. However, ISIN becomes important in specific situations.

  • Corporate actions. When a company does a bonus issue or stock split, the new shares may have a different ISIN from the old ones. Your demat statement uses ISIN to distinguish between different securities of the same company.
  • Demat account statements. Your CDSL or NSDL holding statement lists all securities by their ISIN. Knowing how to read ISIN helps you verify that the correct securities are in your account.
  • Cross-border transactions. ISIN is the global standard. If an Indian security is held or traded by a foreign investor, ISIN is how it is identified internationally.

Where Can I Find the ISIN of a Stock?

ISIN is displayed on NSE and BSE websites under each company's profile. Your demat account statement from NSDL or CDSL also shows the ISIN for each holding. You can look up stock details including ISIN at stockk.trade/products/equity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ISIN change when a stock does a bonus issue or split?

It depends. In some corporate actions, the ISIN remains the same and the holdings are adjusted. In others, particularly when the face value changes due to a split, a new ISIN may be assigned. NSDL and CDSL handle the transition automatically in your demat account. Check your holding statement after any corporate action to confirm.

Is ISIN the same as the stock symbol or ticker?

No. The stock symbol or ticker, like RELIANCE or TCS, is an exchange-specific shortcode used for trading. ISIN is a global standard identifier that works across exchanges and countries. A stock can have different symbols on NSE and BSE but will always have the same ISIN.

Can two companies have the same ISIN?

No. ISIN is unique to each security globally. Even if two companies have similar names, their ISINs will be completely different. The ISIN assignment is managed by the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) in India, which ensures no duplicates.

Do I need to know ISIN for everyday stock trading?

For regular buying and selling through a broker platform, no. You search by company name or symbol and the platform handles ISIN internally. ISIN becomes relevant when reading demat statements, handling corporate actions, or dealing with off-market transfers where the security needs to be precisely identified.

Do mutual funds also have ISINs?

Yes. Every mutual fund scheme in India has its own ISIN. The growth option and the dividend option of the same scheme will have different ISINs. This helps in precisely identifying which scheme variant you hold in your portfolio.
