What is Average Volume? How to Use It to Find Active Stocks
Average volume is the typical number of shares traded in a stock over a specific period, usually 10 days, 30 days, or 90 days. It gives you a baseline of how actively a stock normally trades, so you can tell when today's activity is normal or unusual.
If a shop sells 50 cups of chai every day on average, and one day it sells 200, you know something unusual happened. Average volume does the same thing for stocks. It sets the normal level so you can spot days when activity is significantly above or below what is expected.
How is average volume calculated?
Average Volume (30-day) = Total shares traded in last 30 sessions ÷ 30
If Infosys traded a total of 1.5 crore shares over the last 30 trading days, its 30-day average volume is 5 lakh shares per day. If today's volume is 15 lakh shares, it is 3 times the average, which indicates unusually high activity.
Why is average volume useful?
| Situation | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| Today's volume = Average volume | Normal trading day, nothing unusual |
| Today's volume is 2-3x average | Increased interest, watch for news or developments |
| Today's volume is 5x+ average | Major event likely, earnings or block deal or news |
| Today's volume is much below average | Very quiet day, low participation |
How do traders and investors use average volume?
Average volume helps in stock selection. If you are looking for stocks that are actively traded and easy to buy and sell, filter for stocks with high average daily volume. Stocks with an average volume of less than 50,000 shares per day can be difficult to trade without moving the price.
It also helps with breakout analysis. A price breakout above a key level accompanied by volume 2 to 3 times the average is considered more credible than one on average or below-average volume. You can check average volume for stocks at stockk.trade/products/equity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good average volume for a stock I want to invest in?
For long-term delivery investing, average volume matters less because you are not trading frequently. For active trading, most traders prefer stocks with at least 5 lakh to 10 lakh average daily volume. For F&O trading, choose only the most liquid stocks and index contracts where daily volumes run into crores.
Can a stock with low average volume be a good investment?
Yes. Average volume reflects trading activity, not business quality. A company can be fundamentally strong with low trading volume, especially in the mid-cap and small-cap segments. The risk is that when you want to exit, low average volume can make it harder to sell at your desired price.
Does average volume include block deals and bulk deals?
Yes. Volume reported by exchanges includes all trades, including block deals and bulk deals. A single large block deal can significantly inflate the volume for that day and slightly affect the average. This is why unusually high volume on a single day should be checked for block deal activity.
How do I compare average volume across stocks in different price ranges?
Use average daily turnover instead of volume for cross-stock comparison. A stock trading 10 lakh shares at Rs.50 has a turnover of Rs.5 crore, while another trading 50,000 shares at Rs.2,000 also has Rs.10 crore turnover. Turnover normalizes for price differences.
Where can I find average volume data for Indian stocks?
NSE and BSE websites display volume data for each stock. Most broker platforms and stock screeners show average volume as a standard metric. Common screening criteria include 30-day average volume, which is available on most free stock screening tools for Indian markets.
