What is OBV (On-Balance Volume)? How Volume Confirms Price Trends
On-Balance Volume (OBV) is a cumulative volume indicator that adds volume on up days and subtracts volume on down days. A rising OBV confirms that buying volume supports the price uptrend. Falling OBV confirms selling pressure behind the downtrend.
The logic is simple. If a stock closes higher, all of that day's volume is considered buying volume and added to OBV. If it closes lower, the volume is subtracted. Over time, this running total shows whether volume is flowing into or out of a stock.
How does OBV confirm or warn?
Price rising with rising OBV: uptrend confirmed by volume. Price rising with flat or falling OBV: uptrend is not supported by volume, potential weakness ahead. Price falling with falling OBV: downtrend confirmed. Price falling with rising OBV: sellers are losing control, bounce possible.
What is OBV divergence?
When price makes new highs but OBV does not (bearish divergence), smart money may be distributing. When price makes new lows but OBV stops falling (bullish divergence), accumulation may be happening. OBV divergence often leads price by several sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the absolute OBV number matter?
No. The direction and trend of OBV matter, not the number itself. A rising OBV line is bullish regardless of whether it reads 5 million or 50 million.
Can OBV detect institutional activity?
Indirectly, yes. Large institutional orders move volume significantly. Rising OBV during flat price action may indicate institutional accumulation before a breakout.
Is OBV useful for illiquid stocks?
Less reliable. Low-volume stocks can have OBV distorted by single large orders. Best used on NSE F&O stocks and NIFTY 50 components with consistent volume.
How does OBV compare to volume bars?
Volume bars show daily activity. OBV shows the cumulative trend of volume over time. OBV reveals whether volume is consistently flowing in (accumulation) or out (distribution).
Can I use OBV on weekly charts?
Yes. Weekly OBV smooths daily noise and shows the broader volume trend. A weekly OBV uptrend supporting a weekly price uptrend is a strong bullish confirmation.
