GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has successfully commissioned a 1.25 million tons per annum Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant in Mangalore, Karnataka, marking a key step in expanding India’s domestic petrochemical capabilities.
The plant, located in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited but underwent Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). GAIL acquired the facility in 2023 via the CIRP mechanism and has since carried out major revival and refurbishment works overcoming significant engineering and operational challenges.
The new commissioning will enhance the domestic availability of PTA, a vital raw material used in producing polyester fiber, yarn, PET resin, and other polyester-based products extensively employed in the textile, apparel, and packaging industries.
Strategically situated near New Mangalore Port, the plant benefits from dedicated logistics infrastructure facilitating efficient raw material and finished product movement. GAIL plans to market the product under the brand name 'G-Tex' leveraging its existing distribution network.
This development underpins GAIL’s strategic expansion into downstream petrochemicals and aims to reduce India's import dependence on PTA while supporting growth in its downstream polyester sector.
